When to Use (and Not Use) Antibiotics

Many of us can be a little confused about when to take antibiotics. We know they are strong medicines that can do a lot of good. But they also are in the news often due to concerns that we use them too much and, as result, they are losing their power to fight illnesses. For this reason, doctors and patients should work together to ensure that antibiotics are used only for the kinds of illnesses that they are meant to fight. Antibiotics target bacterial infections, which can make us very sick. Too often, however, they are used for viral illnesses that they cannot really help and that cause them to be less useful when they are really needed.
